W.H.Longfellow
the famous American poet, has said in one of his poems:
‘Lives of great
men all remind us,
We can make our
lives sublime.’
These Lines mean
that we should follow the path of the great men whom we like .I like Pandit
Jawaharlal Nehru very much. He was the first Prime minister of free India. He remained
at that high post till he breathed his last in 1964. He is known as the father
of modern India.
Pandit Jawaharlal
Nehru was born on the 14th November 1889. He was born with a silver
spoon in his mouth. His father, Motilal Nehru was a pleader in Allahabad high
court. In childhood Jawaharlal was educated at home by Latin and Greek pundits.
He was sent to England for his further education. He studied at the famous
universities of harrow and Cambridge. The education he received at those
universities made him a keen student of history and science and trained him to
think independently .From there he passed the bar-at-law, and came back to India
in 1913. On coming home, he did not try to be in his father’s shoes; but jumped
into the freedom movement.
In politics, he
was a close disciple of Mahatma Gandhi. He was sent to prison many a time, for
his active participation in the freedom movement. He was a fiery orator. Mahatma
Gandhi chose him as his political heir. In 1947, when India became a free, he
was made the first prime minister. He made a great name as a fearless fighter
for freedom and an able statesman, guiding the destinies of independent India
for seventeen years.
Besides being a statesman,
Jawarlal Nehru was a writer of great eminence. He wrote many books. An autobiography,
“Glimpses of world History” And “The Discovery of India “are his famous books. Though
a politician, Nehru had a poetic heart too. He was very much fond of children,
and they called him by a loving name,’CHACHA Nehru.’
No doubt Jawarlal Nehru ruled over the country as a prime
minister for seventeen years, but more than that he ruled over the hearts of
people, not only in India, But all over the world. This great man breathed his
last on 27th May, 1964
