When we think of nation, we must have to think of the people who reside in it. Essentially human being is a social animal. He likes to live in society . He is part and parcel of the society. He represents social character in general. Hence the students are also part of society. It is duty of each one to serve socity as to eliminate the evil traditions, customs, rituals, enrich with good traditions, education and betterment on every walk of life.
Students who are young, dynamic, enthusiastic should be taught to devote their sometime to reconstruct and reshape social phenomenons. Students, if imbibed with social services from the very beginning, would definitely become will cultured social elements.In future they would be a great asset to the nation.
There are numerous evil corroding the very structure of the society. Many things can be done at the root level. The problem of environment is becoming worse day by day. The increasing pollution problem can be lessened if every citizen is made aware .Of students can educate the people to clean the surroundings, keeping the areas dust, smoke free, maintaining the laws for cleanliness and thus society may reap the fruits of pollution less atmosphere, pure air, water. It will also help them to remain healthy. Students can help in blood donations, pulse polio-campaigns and other medical campaigns which are held time to time.
Water is an essential need of the society . Students can help increasing water table levels by various programmes. They can construct earthen tank, dig ditches. This will help in arresting rain water and resulting in percolation of it in the ground thus increasing water table level. Tree plantation is also helpful in the rainfall and reducing air pollution . Students can actively participate in tree plantation. The programmes held by NSS activate students for such social services.
Illiteracy, a major problem of our society should not be overlooked, students can participate in total literacy campaigns, adult education programmers and make people literacy. It is said, " Education is the only means by which you can change the fate of society." Students can be brought into this sphere of social service and their energy can be utilized for such purpose.
In our country, women are oppressed, backward lot. They do not enjoy freedom on many fronts. Majority of them have not their own identity. Dowry is as rampant today as ever. Maltreatment of brides, including bride-burning has been on the rise over the past few years. There is no abatement in the incidence of child marriage and harassment of widows.Casteism, racialism, regionalism and narrow regional loyalties have not loosened their bonds on our minds. It is only students who can do something to remove these social evils.
Social services thus inculcate humanitarian, secular attitude in the minds of the students. Hopefully students can exercise objectively, rejects the dead dust, pick up useful elements and lay foundations of a new social structure.
