Modern Civilisation

Civilisation is an elusive and elastic term. It stands for all that is best and worth preserving in the life. Art and literature, thought and philosophy, forms of society and patterns of governments are part and parcel of a nation’s civilisation.
In general way, "A people’s sense of values, the significance it attaches to the different aspects of life, constitute civilisation".
The ideas and ideals which govern a nation’s conduct are a mirror of its civilisation to a large extent.
If civilisation is the measuring scale of the progress of humanity, it must make man better than before. Now this betterment of humanity is a disputed subject. It leads one to a discussion as what is the highest good in life. What the ideal way of life is best for man, is the question which is to be answered. That civilisation alone can rank first which promotes the highest good of man.
The Greeks laid great emphasis on physical culture and intellectual keenness, aesthetic and artistic development. The Romans were less original and independent in their outlook. The culture and civilisation of ancient India drew its strength from religion and philosophy. Modern civilisation  is quite different from all these in certain fundamentals. The modern man is eventually a devotee of science, which consequently shapes and governs his conduct. The greatest achievement of modern man is that he has developed science to an unimaginable degree. With the help of science he has conferred on humanity conveniences and comforts, which were beyond the widest dreams and imaginations of his forefathers.
An ideal civilisation is expected to promote the general good of mankind, to foster the noblest and highest faculties of men, both individually and collectively. It should ensure peace, prosperity and good will in the world. This urgent task can be done by us, provided we put our shoulders to the wheels both individually and collectively . we  must choose the right kind of leader and also provide scope and inspiration for the common man to contribute his object to this urgent regeneration of mankind.

A Road Accident I Have Seen

Last week I witnessed a horrible accident at the crossroads near my college. I still tremble at the very thought of the sight. I was waiting for the green signal. Suddenly a fast riding cyclist came whizzing by and dashed against a private car coming from the opposite side. The cyclist was thrown off onto the road. His cycle was smashed out of shape. It  was learn that he was a factory worker and was in hurry as he was to go to his duty. The car driver tried to swerve in order to avoid  him and managed only to bang into a curb along the road side. He had shown a remarkable presence of mind.
People rushed to the sight of the accident. I saw that it was an awful sight. There were splinters of glass all around. The headlights of the car were completely smashed. It was Lucky that no one had sustained any serious injury. There was blood all over the cyclist’s shirt due to a deep cut  he had sustained above his eyebrow. He was stunned to speak. The car- driver also was dazed.
People helped the cyclist stand up and took him to the footpath. Soon a traffic policeman came there and took the statements of the cyclist and the driver of the car. The bystanders also were interrogated. Some suggested to take the cyclist to a hospital. The policeman stopped a rickshaw and asked him to take the wounded cyclist to the hospital. Everybody present there was of the opinion that it was the fault of the cyclist. The car driver was allowed to go. After the cyclist was taken to hospital all the people dispersed. I too came home admiring the alertness of the car- driver. Had he not shown the alertness. What would have happened the very thought of this staggers my imagination
However, I learn a lesson that we should never drive recklessly and always be careful and alert. In case, unfortunately, an accident occurs, we must render all help to the injured.

A Visit To A Museum: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

The museum is a place of great interest. It gives us an illustrative account of the country’s progress through the ages. A party of our school students went on an educational  trip to Mumbai. One evening our teacher took us to the, The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya on the esplanade road(now mahatma Gandhi road). The first thing that impressed us was the palatial building which must have cost lakhs. The gate opened at 7 a. m and we were permitted to go in.
There was a picture gallery in which we saw pictures and portraits of different kings and heroes of the past. Some related to the Gupta period and other to the Mughal. They were lovely and lifelike. They spoke of the glory of the ancient India. We moved on to the next room. There we saw very queer garments. They were embroidered all over with gold and silver threads which were a bright as ever . There were costly carpets, rugs and shawls with beautiful and artistic designs on them.
In another room, there were arranged images, pots and pans, ornaments of ladies, weapons of war and agricultural implements. This room was a store house of arts crafts. There were life-size idols of lord Buddha. They were made of the  rarest stone. In a corner we saw some bronze statues which were thousands of years old. This room had also pottery from Pune walnut screens from Srinagar. Large vases painted in bright colors had beautiful carvings on them. There were also fine brass articles from  Moradabad. There were various coins of diverse shapes and sizes, denominations and designs. I could not make out what was written on them.
There was a section for the specimens of clothes. Silken garments from Banaras and Bangalore were there. Summer clothes from Lucknow and winter clothes from Ludhiyana were there.
The machinery section was the most educative. Various reputed firms like l& t, Siemens, kirloskar, A.C.C etc had their stalls. They had appointed men to give the onlookers the information of their appliances
This short visit to the museum was very educative and interesting.
